InFiRo Summer School 2013



infiro logo 2013The second InFiRo Summer School of Robotics, Electronics and Computerized Laboratory will be organized in the framework of the EU project InFiRo. Just as the first InFiRo school, it will be held in GIRANDELLA hotel in Rabac, Croatia, from June 23th to June 29th 2013. It is intended for participants from Slovenia, Croatia, Turkey and Romania from 12 to 17 years of age regardless of whether they are complete beginners or have already has some experience in this area. Participants will be able to choose from four workshops, which will be carried out in the hotel premises. Work places will be equipped with a computer and accessories necessary for each of the workshops. Each workshop will be supervised by two tutors and a coordinator. The workshops will start on Monday afternoon by familiarizing participants with the work. On the following days workshops will start after breakfast until lunch break, and will continue after lunch until 16:00. Late afternoon and evening will be scheduled for relaxation, sporting activities, excursions and social games. Summer School program will include a visit to nearby businesses, based on complex modern technologies. The last day is intended to present the achievements of participants.

The first half of the workshops is intended for presentation of the workshop content, based on practical work, assembly and testing of circuits, sensors, mechanisms, models, etc. In the second half of the workshop participants plan, implement, test and document their own project.

Following the workshop participants will prepare a report. Each Participant of the Summer School will get a DVD bulletin, photos, videos, documentation of all projects, etc.

Summer school is derived from experience summer school of electronics and robotics in Slovenia. The video is posted on YouTube and on INFIRO media website, proceedings are available on the website of the Society for the development of technical education of Slovenia.

- To introduce participants to the workshop content through problem assignments, practical learning and selected laboratory work,
- Encourage students in acquiring and combining knowledge in engineering and technology, science and mathematics,
- To present and teach participants how to obtain the theoretical knowledge required for the derivation of problem goals,
- To assist participants in developing and implementing goals through targeted and problem-oriented teaching model, to offer both fundamental knowledge and practical experience and skills relevant to the selected technical area,
- To encourage students to design, develop and conduct their own project ideas individually or in groups,
- To prepare them for presentation of project achievements in their own written and oral form,
- To present to participants the possibilities which the area offers in connection with possible future educational programs in engineering and later careers
- To contribute to the development of an individual (the participant) and his ideas and potential, and thus help them to articulate their self-image in terms of creativity,

Robotics Workshop

The workshop combines contents of computer programming, engineering design of machines and devices (eg mobile robots), proper operation and use of basic sensors and actuators. We use the standard but free software tools (such as Bascom) and a controller based on AVR microcontroller developed in Slovenia in the EU project ComLab. For the assembly of the device model the Fischer Technik collection is used.

The specific objectives of the workshop:

- To introduce workshop participants to basics of robotics as a discipline that combines information technology, electronics and mechanical engineering,
- To acquaint participants with the fundamental principles of programmable devices, which contain the basic mechanisms, sensors, motors and other components,
- To acquaint participants with the fundamentals of computer programming robots (for example, Bascom AVR microcontrollers).

Summary of contents:

- Use digital outputs for control of lights and various types of electric motors,
- Use of digital and analog inputs, for example switches and various sensors
- Design and assembly of equipment models, which include movement transfer from motorcycles to the mechanisms and structures,
- Basics of programming in a programming environment Bascom model

ljsk2Electronics Workshop

The workshop is based on the practical assembly and testing of electronic circuits, and their use to solve a specific set of tasks. Unlike the similar introductory courses we are not just dealing with resistors, capacitors, diodes and transistors, but also learn about the operation and use of sensors, analog and digital integrated circuits, and microcontroller programming. An electronic circuit is assembled on a prototype standard plate (protoboard). Practical experience is interwoven with usage of Yenka computer program that simulates the operation of electrical circuits.

The specific objectives of the workshop:

- Introducing the workshop participants to the basics of electronics and its value in use,
- Participants learn to use measuring instruments for the analysis of electronic circuits, ammeter and voltmeter in a circuit with resistors and resistive sensors for light and temperature,
- Presenting the fundamental properties of electronic components and their basic configurations, based on problem assignments presented to participants,
- Present the main possibilities of electronically programmable microcontroller programming,
- Present the world of design and testing of electronic circuits in the physical design (drawing on a prototype plate, solder circuit boards) as well as in the virtual world of computer simulations.

Summary of contents:

- Use of ammeters, voltmeters, and the analysis of electronic circuits,
- Assembly of example circuits with basic electronic components such as diodes, transistors, operational amplifiers, digital integrated circuits, etc.,
- Introducing electronic subsystems such as voltage divider, a voltage comparator, amplifiers, digital logic gates, flip-flops, etc.,
- Using Yenka in the simulation of electronic circuits,
- Basics of programming in a programming environment Bascom

Research workshop

This workshop is for those participants who have previous experience in the field of electronics and / or robotics. The scope of the research work is determined with small group of the candidates.

Research work will be focused on three main topics:

- Workshop on computerized science laboratory
- Arduino workshop
- Sumo Robots

Workshop on computerized science laboratory

The workshop is based on the practical application of computer measurement and control in various scientific fields (physics, chemistry, biology...) and technical sciences. Participants use electronic sensors to digitally capture measurements of different physical variables such as temperature, light, force, pH, etc., for presentation and analysis of experimental data tables. In addition to the input functions computerized control is also introduced, allowing the assembly of digital control systems and mechanisms. In addition to the use of application software, the participants familiar with programming in standard programming environments such as Visual Basic have the possibility of transfer to other programming environments (such as Delphi, C + +, LabView, ...). In project work, participants are able to target specific applications in science and / or techniques.

The specific objectives of the workshop

- To introduce participants of the workshop to electronic measuring systems,
- Teach participants the fundamentals of digital capture, presentation and analysis of experimental data,
- Understand the concept of computerized control via actuators (control heaters, motors, lamps, etc.)
- Give examples of the use of computerized laboratory in various science and engineering disciplines,

Summary of contents

- Structure and operation of systems for computer-aided measurement and control,
- Operation of the digital / analog inputs and outputs,
- Numerical and graphical presentation of measurement data
- Types of components in a computer-based systems
- Analysis of computer programs for capturing and storing measurement data

Arduino workshop

During work with students the "Arduino Uno R3" microcontroller board will be introduced. Various external sensors and actuators will be connected to the Arduino Uno. Participants will become familiar with programming in Arduino programming language based on C/C++ language

During project work, participants are able to choose among several proposed projects or to develop their own solution.

The specific objectives of the workshop:

- To introduce workshop participants to basics of microcontrollers
- To acquaint participants with the basic sensors and actuators
- To acquaint participants with the fundamentals of Arduino programming language based on C/C++ programming language.

- Use of digital and analog inputs for connecting various sensors
- Use digital outputs for control of lights and various types of electric motors,-
- Basics of programming in Arduino programming language
